“To imagine is everything, to know
is nothing at all”.
- Anatole France
Lets take a quick look at what is responsible for all those ideas
in the first place, your brain. Many popular scientific books begin
by calling the brain “the most complex object in the universe”
Your brain is composed of over 10 billion neurons connected by more
than 10 trillion synaptic connections, all this in a soft, pink
package weighing in at a few pounds. Amazing.
“All men who have achieved great things
have been great dreamers”.
- Orison Swett Marden
In theory, this would give the brain an astronomical quantity of
“degrees of freedom”. Put another way, your brain appears
to be a processor capable of generating endless variations and expressive
configurations. We are powerful beyond measure!
O.K. so why is it so hard to write a song. Sometimes one word gets
me stuck for hours, how can my brain be capable of generating “endless
variations” when I can’t think of a simple rhyme or
“You can't wait for inspiration. You
have to go after it with a club”. - Jack London
Maybe, there’s a better way to access the idea stream of
endless variations. Maybe there is a way to automatically enter
the pure creative state, every time you try.
The brain seems to be a virtual space of free play. Just think
about that phrase for a second, a virtual space of free play. The
mere act of thinking gets transposed into a game of linking all
those neurons with synapses. There is a virtual playground in your
head and I’you need to swing on the mental monkey bars.
“Imagination has brought mankind through
the dark ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination
led Columbus to discover America. Imagination led Franklin to discover
electricity”. - L. Frank Baum
You have to have the need to express yourself. Ask your self –
why do I have to be a songwriter? Why do I have to write this song?
Yes, you have the need to interpret your experiences and ideas through
story and song. From nothing to something - through you the songwriter.
All great things take time, you must be patient with yourself and
the process of accessing your creative state. The more you concentrate
on being creative and thinking creatively, the easier it will become
to "be inspired"
"I'm the interpreter. I'm the one who
takes your words and brings them to life. I was trained to sing
and dance and laugh, and that's what I want to do". - Aaliyah
Don’t stress out if things aren’t going according to
plan. There is no plan. You cannot control what is going to happen.
You have to give up on this idea of control, controlling anything
is the exact opposite of creativity. The more that you are open
and ready to accept whatever comes out of you, the better and more
honest your art is going to be. If what you were expecting doesn’t
happen so what!
If you are relaxed and open to the possibilities, you WILL find
the inspiration. Remember where this is coming from, this is coming
from the deepest parts of your sub-conscious and it may not all
make sense right now, just let it all pour out.
