Songwriting is one part work, and one part pure creativity. Once
you have a great idea, you have to put the in the time and sweat
to turn it into something that people want to hear again and again.
But without that great idea to start with, well, you haven’t
got much without it.
“Creativity is allowing yourself to
make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep”. - Scott
What is good art and where does it come from? Good art makes you
feel. Whether it’s a painting, poetry, a song or a performance,
it must connect with your soul. The short answer is that no one
really knows. The long answer is, it comes from within. There is
an amazing and largely untapped source of creativity within every
one of us. We are born with this incredibility powerful ability,
and sadly, most of us have spent a lifetime repressing it.
"I never wanted to be famous. I only
wanted to be great". - Ray Charles
Sometimes you’re left with more questions than answers,
some of the best art in the world seems beyond human understanding.
Perhaps the artist themselves don’t fully understand what
it all means.
After all, your art is an interpretation of your experiences translated
through a medium ( auditory or visual ) And then re-interpretted
through someone elses senses and perceptions. So where does it come
“My role in society, or any artist's
or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell
people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a
reflection of us all”.
- John Lennon
It’s time to retrain your brain. As a songwriter (a hyper-creative
being) you are going to start using a lot more of your brain. This
will be fun, being creative is supposed to be fun! Sure, there’s
always some frustration with creating art, I find for me that happen
later on as I am trying to refine and perfect something. When I’m
in the pure creative mode, I’m happy like a child. Remember
how I said there’s a playground in your head?
Well it’s time to get in there and have a little fun!
“It's hard to be fully creative without
structure and constraint. Try to paint without a canvas. Creativity
and freedom are two sides of the same coin. I like the best of both
worlds. Want freedom? Get organized. Want to get organized? Get
creative”. - David Allen
I want you to start approaching every decision in your life with
this question – what are my options. Question everything!
I’m not saying you need to get militant about anything, just
explore. I want you to question yourself more than anything. The
point I’m trying to make is to GET OUT OF YOUR RUT, go with
your gut. Get your brain active and exploring again. Start in the
morning and approach every decision with options and interest instead
of boredom and repetition.
I try so hard to live in the moment - I don't
think ahead very much. - Sarah McLachlan
Go to work a different way, do your hair a new way, walk instead
of ride, ride instead of drive. Do anything that isn’t ordinary.
This will help put your brain into creative mode more often, and
help keep you there for longer. I cannot stress enough the power
of your thoughts and perceptions. You must make the choice to perceive
your surroundings from an observant creative standpoint if you want
to be a conduit for expression.
"I do a so-called trip into myself:
I sit down at the piano and the melody might start to evolve from
my playing or then I might start to sing it." - Enya
As a songwriter, a hyper-creative being, that is what you are.
It is your job to tell the story and express the emotions behind
it. It takes a creative and open personality to express humanities
fears, hopes and dreams. You are unique and you’ve had experiences
no one else has had, through these eyes of experience you pass down
your vision. This already makes your song unique.
